BOOK REVIEW By Peter Baker
FORMULA 1 - CAR BY CAR 1990-99
This book covers what many consider the most exciting decade in the history of Grand Prix racing. If in doubt, one only has to scan the chapter titles; Senna Regains His Controversial Crown, Mansell And Williams FW14B Dominate, Prost Returns To Claim His Fourth Title, Michael Schumacher In A Class Of His Own, and Damon Hill Emulates His Father As Champion, and there’s plenty more….
This well researched and immensely satisfying to read, 300-page book by Peter Higham, fifth volume in his series, takes an in-depth look back at each team that competed during the 10 years 1990-1999, answering with ease any questions that might get thrown up in the course of a conversation, such as, who drove which car at which race, and did they win or lose?
The wide range of varied and nicely produced colour pictures trigger the memory, while each chapter concludes with a double-spread results summary, including driver performance, points total, race winners and championship winners. Finally, I found the concluding index not only helpful, but also very comprehensive. This is an important area that regrettably is becoming more and more overlooked, or in some cases, considered as completely unnecessary.
It still irks me that EVRO, in a bid to reduce costs, omits dust jackets, thus giving its publications a slight down market feel. That said, Formula 1 - Car by Car 1990-99 is actually two books in one, a good story plus an encyclopaedia, making it very good value at £50. Four-and-a-half stars, and thoroughly recommended.
