BOOK REVIEW  By Peter Baker

Audi R8: The Autobiography of R8-405

I’m not sure about this book. It’s very subject specific, which in itself is okay. After all, Ian’s attention to detail is as always second to none. But to my mind, it’s about the wrong car. Chassis number R8-405 only won two minor races in period, whilst sister car, chassis number 404, actually won Le Mans 24 Hours in the year 2000 with nine times winner Tom Kristensen at the wheel and is the one we all know and love, and should be reading about.

Also, and I’ll get hanged by the publishers for this, in my view the subject matter doesn’t justify 320 pages. I’m guessing Ian ran out of steam, because he’s padded the story with plenty of oft repeated Audi history and driver profiles. Maybe, and it’s only conjecture, but maybe, current owner of R8 chassis number 405, Martin Halusa, persuaded Porter Press International to publish this extensive one-car volume to generally prepare enthusiasts for the car’s appearance on the fast-developing historic racing scene, where it should sweep all before it.

Anyway folks. Sorry, but I’m not impressed. Like I said at the beginning, it’s about the wrong car. These things happen.
