BOOK REVIEW  By Peter Baker

SUPERBEARS: THE STORY OF HESKETH RACING

Rich kid starts Formula 1 team. Strikes lucky. Wins a couple of races. Then runs out of money and fades into obscurity. Boring.

Only, in the case of rich kid Thomas Alexander Fermor-Hesketh, along with his public school pals, the very word boredom was anathematic to their way of life. Extravagant. Unconventional. Loud. Outlandish. And generally licentious is a better fit. Or, as somebody famous once muttered, three days into yet another party: ‘Never a dull moment when Alexander and James Hunt are in the same room.’ They could have added: the same planet! But there again, if you can remember what happened during those golden years of motorsport, 1972-1978, you probably weren’t there!

If ever a book deserved five stars, then this is it. No wasted words. Well researched, superbly written, and chocka with interesting, carefully chosen images, each caption telling its own story. The book closes with a full run down of race results, and chassis numbers. What more could one ask? Foreword by Jools Holland OBE. Buy.
