Masters at Old Timer Grand Prix 2025

Tuesday 5th August 2025

CLOSE REPORT

Masters produces wet and dry Formula One excitement at the Oldtimer Grand Prix.

Masters Racing Legends field for 1966-'85 Formula One cars got their full treat of Green Hell weather with a soaking wet Saturday race and a dry Sunday race at the Nürburging. Mike Cantillon proved to be the absolute star of the Oldtimer Grand Prix meeting, as the Irishman ran home wins on both days. Take a look at our YouTube Videos from the Weekend! Masters Racing Legendsfor 1966-1985 F1 Cars.

On Friday, Cantillon had stuck his Williams FW07C on pole with a gutsy effort early in the session before saving his tyres for the races. Joined on the front row by the similar FW07C of Yutaka Toriba, Cantillon continued to assert his authority with a dominant performance in Saturday's rain-soaked first race of the weekend. Reigning champion Matthew Wrigley initially led the chasing pack but when he was forced to retire his damaged Tyrrell 011, Jamie Constable's 011 and Werner d'Ansembourg's FW07C continued their vain pursuit of Cantillon, as they battled hard over second place. Making his Tyrrell as wide as possible, Constable hung on to the spot, the pair leading home Toriba and Ken Tyrrell's Tyrrell 011.In the post-82 class, James Hagan proved best at tiptoeing through the rain, as his Tyrrell 011B beat Valerio Leone's Arrows A6 to the class win, while Marty Bullock headed the pre-78 runners in his Williams FW06 after a three-way fight with John Spiers' March 761 and Peter Williams in the Lec CRP1.

In Sunday morning's dry race, Cantillon charged through from fifth on the partially reversed grid to make it two from two. In fact, the Irishman limped home with a slow puncture and a clipped front wing, keeping half a tick in hand over the FW07Cs of d'Ansembourg and Toriba to create a Williams 1-2-3 on the podium. In pursuit of the handicapped Cantillon, d'Ansembourg pipped Toriba to second in the final corner of the race! This time, Constable was a close fourth while Steve Brooks (Lotus 91) came out on top in a second gaggle of 3-litre F1 cars to claim fifth.Meanwhile, Leone turned the tables on Hagan to make it one win each in the post-82 class while Bullock doubled up on pre-78 class victories ahead of Stanley Fulton in the Penske PC3. Peter Williams had to give up the chase as his Lec's engine expired four laps from the end but was still classified third in class.

In three weeks, Masters will be back in full force at Silverstone for the Festival (22-24 August) to showcase all of its seven grids, while Masters Racing Legends will round off the 2025 season with a brace of support races at the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 5-7 December where we will contribute to a festive finale of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship.
