CLOSE REPORT

Engines Roar as VSCC Season Launches at Silverstone Spring Start

The VSCC's season opener delivered thrilling racing, the return of the High Speed Trial, and a strong focus on welcoming the next generation into motorsport.

The Vintage Sports-Car Club launched its 2026 race season in fine style at Silverstone, where a packed programme of racing, activities, and innovation made for a memorable Spring Start. The return of the High Speed Trial, following its reintroduction last year, proved a resounding success, with 10 of the 19 finishers being first time racers, a clear sign of the Club's commitment to opening up circuit racing to new competitors.

"It was fantastic to see so many new faces out on track, particularly in the High Speed Trial,” said Tania Brown, VSCC Club Secretary. "Welcoming and supporting the next generation is at the heart of what we do, and working alongside StarterMotor at Silverstone was a brilliant step forward. Introducing their students to motorsport in this environment is incredibly valuable, and we look forward to continuing and growing this relationship in the future.”

A Strong Start On and Off the Track

The afternoon race programme delivered a series of standout performances. Max Sowerby enjoyed a superb day with a double podium finish in both the Owner Driver Mechanic (ODM) and Allcomers Scratch races. The Patrick Lindsay Trophy saw an impressive showing from ERA machinery, with all three podium positions filled by the marque, including James Topliss in third, one of two young drivers making their ERA racing debut. The other, Stephanie Wilton, overcame overheating issues and a pit stop to finish a commendable ninth, we believe she is the first woman to race in the UK in an ERA since Donington 1987 when Prince Chula's daughter, Narisa Chakrabongse, took part in Romulus.

Away from the main circuit action, the ever-popular AutoSOLO returned to the outer paddock, this year attracting the attention of a film crew. These accessible, low-speed tests continue to play a vital role in introducing members to competitive driving, helping build confidence and a deeper understanding of how to control vintage machinery in a safe and enjoyable environment.

A particular highlight of the weekend was the presence of StarterMotor, who joined the Club with a group of students to experience motorsport firsthand. Through paddock tours, demonstrations, and behind-the-scenes access, the initiative offered a valuable insight into the sport and its many career pathways. The VSCC are proud to support StarterMotor as they undertook this initiative.

With a successful Spring Start setting the tone, the 2026 VSCC season promises more exciting racing, welcoming opportunities, and unforgettable moments. Whether you're a seasoned competitor or new to the sport, there has never been a better time to get involved.

Where else can you see the VSCC Race this year?
