Jackie Stewart Trophy, 3-liter single-seaters 1966-1972: Big John Surtees would be amazed...

For most spectators, the class of F1 cars from 1966-1972 was interesting mainly because of the start of former Grand Prix star Jean Alesi. The free Friday practice was a shock for them: Alesi destroyed the front of the precious Ferrari 312 (1969) in his fourth lap due to an accident in the harbor chicane!

The technicians of Metuzalem Racing worked overnight, and Alesi was able to take part in Saturdays qualifying and set a good 6th time. Ahead of him, mostly specialists qualified: the favored serial winner of Monaco, Michael Lyons in the Surtees TS9, young Matthew Wrigley in the March 721G, Ewen Sergison in his Surtees, Philipp Buhofer in a Brabham BT33, and Katsu Kubotas Lotus 72.
Three of the 18 entered cars did not start on Sunday for technical reasons - among them, to the dismay of his fans, Alesi's Ferrari! The unfortunate winner of the 1995 Canadian GP only made it from the paddock to the pits, where his engine irreparably died…
It didn't faze the excellent Lyons. In the ex-John Love and Mike Hailwood car, he completely dominated the 12-lap race, and Stewart's trophy was his.

If Big John Surtees was watching from heaven, he probably couldn't believe the performances of his creations: Scot Ewen Sergison and his TS9B had an excellent start and settled in 2nd place ahead of Wrigley. After the yellow March 721G failed to finish, Sergison achieved an unprecedented double success for the Surtees make! Another former professional in the field, Mexican Adrian Fernandez (BRM P153), had a good start. For a while he drove in 4th place ahead of Kubota, but then he lost everything due to his own mistake. Much better fared Mr. Buhofer from Switzerland, who brought his 1970 Brabham BT33 to the finish as third.
